Alnmouth

Alnmouth is a beach resort town in Northumberland, England. The name is pronounced 'Allenmouth'. Many non-locals get this wrong, including many conductors on British trains.

Get in

By train

  • 🌍 Alnmouth train station (The train station is roughly a 20-minute walk away from Alnmouth town). Alnmouth is easily accessible from Newcastle or Edinburgh on the east coast mainline service, which is run by LNER. The trip is about 50 minutes to or from Newcastle.

By road

Alnmouth is about 5 miles from the A1 trunk road north to Scotland and this is the main access route for the town.

By bus

Alnmouth is on Arriva Bus route 518 running between Newcastle and Alnwick. There are three stops in Hipsburn (including one at the top of the Station approach), one in Lesbury and three in Alnmouth. The service runs hourly in each direction and is generally very reliable. Travelsure also operates their 519 Service between Alnmouth Station and Alnwick during the summer season.

By plane

Newcastle International Airport (NCL IATA) is about 40 miles to the south.

  • 🌍 Alnmouth Saltmarsh and Dunes. Site of Special Scientific Interest, the largest saltflat on the north-east coast, located on the south bank of the River Aln estuary
  • 🌍 The Old School Gallery, Foxton Rd, +44 1665 830554. Daily 10AM - 5PM. Commercial art gallery with changing exhibitions, cafe and camping huts

Do

  • 🌍 Alnmouth Golf Club. The village golf course is the 4th oldest in England dating from 1869. It was designed by Mungo Park.
  • Photography. The village and sandy beach are very photogenic.
  • Sailing. There are yacht and small boat moorings within the estuary.
  • Alnmouth arts festival. 2 days in June each year. One weekend during which about 70 artists sets up stalls showing paintings, photos sculpture and textiles.
  • 🌍 The Friary of St Francis. Arrange a day visit or to stay for a couple of nights on a retreat in this Franciscans Friary. The gardens are sometime open to visitors.

  • 🌍 Village post office. Mace store which has some essentials.

Eat

  • The Schooner Hotel, 8 Northumberland St, NE66 2RS, +44 1665 830287. It dates back to the 1600s and has always been at the centre of the village life. There are of course rumours of hauntings.
  • Hope Anchor Hotel, Northumberland St, +44 1665 830363. It won bronze award in northumberland for best local produced food.
