Alsen

Alsen is a small town in the Red River Valley, in northeastern North Dakota. It had a population of about 30 people in 2019. Coordinates are Latitude 48.63N & Longitude 98.59W.

Understand

This town was founded in 1889, and was originally named Storlie, after several local families of Norwegian origin. Several Danish families who had settled in the area renamed it after Alsen Island in Denmark.

  • By car: from Devil's Lake, 38 miles north on State Hy 20, and 5 miles east on State Hy 66.

  • Alsen Museum, Main St, +1 701 843-7032. July 1 - September 1, by appointment. Exhibits from North Dakota early days; photos, tools, household items, blacksmith tools.
