Chengjiang

Chengjiang (澄江, Chéngjiāng) is a county-level city in Southeastern Yunnan. It is administratively part of the prefecture-level city of Yuxi.

Understand

Chengjiang is best known for two things; Fuxian Lake and Maotianshan Shales (also known as the Chengjiang Fossil Site).

Get in

Chengjiang can only be reached by bus. The nearest railway station is the Kunming South Railway Station in Kunming. There is a bus station opposite Kunming South Railway Station, which has bus services to Chengjiang. Buses to Chengjiang also depart from Kunming's East Bus Station.

Displays fossils from the Chengjiang Fossil Site. Free.
  • 🌍 Maotianshan Shales (帽天山页岩, 澄江化石地 Chengjiang Fossil Site, 澄江动物化石群古生物国家地质公园 Chengjiang Fauna National Geopark, 帽天山国家地质公园 Maotianshan National Geopark) (best reached by car or taxi, as the nearest bus stop is about 3km from the park entrance; the park entrance is about 8km north of the museum), +86 877 6717139. 09:00-16:30, no entry after 16:00. A UNESCO World Heritage Site rich in fossils from the Cambrian Period. Some of the fossils are displayed at a small on-site museum, but the majority of them are now kept at the Chengjiang Fossil Site World Natural Heritage Museum. Free.

  • 🌍 Fuxian Lake (抚仙湖) (about 6km south of Chengjiang's downtown area; most buses to the lake originate from the bus stop outside the Chengjiang City Government building and pass by the Chengjiang Bus Terminal; there are multiple bus routes, with some buses travelling down the western side of the lake and others travelling down the eastern side of the lake). The 3rd largest lake in Yunnan. There are many parks and tourist resorts surrounding the lake.
