Chulanur Peafowl Sanctuary

The Chulanur Peafowl Sanctuary is in Palakkad district of Central Kerala in India.

Understand

The Chulanur Peafowl (Peacocks) Sancturary is located in the districts of Thrissur and Palakkad. The sanctuary headquarters is at Chulanur at about 8 km from Thiruvilwamala. Chulanur Peafowl Sanctuary is dedicated to the memory of a leading Indian ornithologist, K.K. Neelakantan.

History

This sanctuary was established in 14 March 1996. It is the only peacock sanctuary in Kerala.

Landscape

The terrain is undulating with small hillocks and valleys, with occasional rocky outcrops and patches. The average altitude is about 120 m.

Climate

The area receives both southwest and northeast monsoons. The average annual percipation is 2200 mm. Dry conditions prevail in the area in summer months due to the hot winds coming through the Palakkad gap.

Entry is free, but you have to report at the office before enter into the sanctuary.

Visitors can find hotel and lodges in Thrissur and Palakkadu city.

Camping

One-day nature awareness camps for students and nature clubs are conducted at nature education centre in the sanctuary. Visitors can go around the sanctuary area along the nature trails provided.
