Dounan

Dounan (斗南鎮) is a township that in Yunlin County, Taiwan.

Understand

The original name of Dounan is Taliwu (他里霧), a name taken from one of the branches of an aboriginal tribe. The development of Taliwu had started since the Ming Dynasty, when Koxinga came to Taiwan.

By rail

The township is accessible by train through the following TRA stations:

  • 🌍 Dounan station (斗南車站), No. 2, Zhongshan Rd. The station was constructed in 1903, and is a mix of Japanese and Western-style architecture.
  • 🌍 Shigui station (石龜車站). A small station that serves the local residents and is of little interest to visitors.

Culture and history

  • 🌍 Former Dounan Police Precinct Building (斗南分局舊辦公廳舍), No. 170, Zhongshan Road, +88655978391. An historic building that once served as the police headquarters for the area. There is not much to see or do inside, but the building is worth stopping by for a few photos.

Temples

  • 🌍 Dounan Shun'an Temple (斗南順安宮), No. 126, Section 1, Chang'an Road, +88655972541. 08:00-18:00. A temple that is primarily dedicated to Mazu that was constructed in 1736.
  • 🌍 Slta-vana Temple (寒林寺), 630 Zhongzheng Rd, +88655973055. A temple dedicated to the victims of the Japanese occupation of Taiwan.

Museums

  • 🌍 Yunlin Environmental Education Pavilion (雲林環境教育館), Nanchang Road, +88655962507. W Th Sa Su 10:00-18:00. As the name suggests, it's a small indoor educational exhibit of some of the flora and fauna of the surrounding area. Most of the material is provided in Chinese only.

Parks and nature

  • 🌍 Taliwu Cultural Park (他里霧文化園區), No. 27, Nanchang Road, +88655962507. 07:00-18:00. A small area with some information on, and exhibits relating to, the local culture.

Sport

  • 🌍 Yunlin County Stadium (雲林縣政府體育場). A multi-use stadium that is able to hold 10,000 people.
  • 🌍 Yunlin Dounan Field (雲林縣立斗南田徑場), No. 150號, Datong Road, +88655962170. A small stadium beside a running track.
