Harper

Harper is a city in Southern Liberia.

Understand

At the south east of the country, Harper is the former capital of Maryland. It is known for its beautiful beaches and beach houses. Now these houses are dilapidated, but it's still possible to get a sense of the glory of the past.

Get in

  • MAF mission flight from Monrovia

Get around

You can wave down virtually any motorbike without a passenger to get a ride. For L$20, you can go to any part of the main city.

The same motorbikes will take you to Pleebo for L$250. Alternatively, you can take a commercial car. There are trucks that charge about L$150 per person.

See

  • 🌍 William Tubman Mansion. Mansion of former president and father of modern Liberia, William Tubman. The building is quite neglected but still one of the most impressive buildings in the whole town.
  • 🌍 St. Mark Episcopal Church.
  • 🌍 Mt. Scott United Methodist Church.
  • Stone Mason Building, Upcape.
  • Cape Palmas Beach - by the port
  • 🌍 Tubman University.

Eat

There are little coffee shacks setup around Harper. They sell eggs (cooked with local spices) with bread, instant coffee, spam, sardines, and spaghetti in a local spicy sauce. Great if you are missing western-type foods.
