Indian Land

Indian Land is a village in the northernmost portion of Lancaster County in South Carolina. It is a fast-growing bedroom community of the major city of Charlotte in North Carolina lying east of the township of Fort Mill.

Understand

While commonly referred to as a village, Indian Land remains unincorporated and some businesses use Fort Mill as their address, because it's the nearest incorporated area. However, efforts are underway to incorporate the area of northern Lancaster County into a municipality. The goal of this incorporation is to give Indian Land a voice on the local and state levels with enhanced services for the community. The plan aims to control the growth of Indian Land while preserving the charm of this once rural area. As of 2014, there is was a highway corridor overlay district created to regulate traffic and business develop before any incorporation.

Get in

Indian Land is best accessed from South Carolina Highway 160 in Fort Mill and U.S. Highway 521 from the Ballantyne community of Charlotte and Lancaster.

Get around

While there are sidewalks, Indian Land is a large community covering an area nearly 8 miles (13 km) long, so a car is essential for getting from the southern to northern end of the Indian Land panhandle.
