Międzyodrze

Międzyodrze is in Zachodniopomorskie, on the border between Germany and Poland.

Understand

Międzyodrze (lower Oder Valley) is a marsh area between Oder and Regalica (branch of Oder) rivers, beginning in Widuchowa village and ending in Szczecin. The area is shared between Poland (Park Krajobrazowy Dolina Dolnej Odry) and Germany (Nationalpark Unteres Odertal)

Landscape

Flat, marsh area some 10-15 km across from west to east and 100 km across from north to south, with labyrinth of water channels between Oder and Regalica.

Flora and fauna

Birds, fish, frogs, beavers, hogs.

Get in

From Gryfino, Szczecin or any town near Oder or Regalica.

Fees and permits

Entry is free.

Get around

By kayak. If you don't have one, you can rent it - look for "Kajaki" or "Wypożyczalnia Kajaków" (kayaks, kayak rental). Some areas are accessible by foot or bicycle, but don't count on it, the terrain is very difficult to scale without some water vehicle. Motor boats are allowed only on Oder and Regalica.

See

The wildlife and old water gates.

Buy

You can't buy anything at Międzyodrze, do your shopping at towns on Oder or Regalica.

Eat

Bring your own food. You can fish (if you have permit).

Drink

Bring your own drink (or boil the water).

Sleep

At nearby towns. There are some dry places where you can try pitching a tent, but they might be difficult to find. Leave no trace.

Stay safe

Always use safety equipment like life vests - it's huge and difficult area without any population, so any outside help might be problematic. Get a good map (so you can find your way through channel labyrinth) and mosquito repellent. Watch out for bigger boats on Oder and Regalica.
