Rethymno (regional unit)

Rethymno is in the Greek island of Crete.

Cities

  • 🌍 Rethymno — this interesting town is mostly popular with families
  • 🌍 Anogeia — a village famous for its musicians and from the fierce resistance of its residents, against nazis during WWII that resulted entire destruction of the village.
  • 🌍 Bali — not the Indonesian island, but a popular tourist village
  • 🌍 Plakias — a stunning, long, gently shelving largely sandy beach
  • Margarites — a surprisingly beautiful and quiet town south of Rethymno off the old road to Heraklion, famous for its ceramic cottage industry. Look around the village before buying; some workshops are hidden gems, others are low-quality tourist traps.
  • The villages of Mylopotamos. Nice option for those who want to taste meat cooked with traditional methods and recipes.

Talk

Greek language is used, with other languages being used in tourist attractions. In mountainous villages, however, foreign languages aren't widespread. The accent is with heavy "l"s and "r"s, even if they speak other languages. For example, when an Anogeian says "Millllk" it means milk.
