  • 🌍 Saint-Sever Abbey (Abbaye de Saint-Sever). UNESCO World Heritage Site This Benedictine abbey was founded by the Count of Gascony, Guillaume Sanche, at the end of 10th century. His countless possessions in the 11th century extended from Médoc to Pamplona in Spain. Gregoire de Montaner, who reigned over the abbey from 1028 to 1072, made it a powerful artistic home for the most talented sculptors and illuminated manuscript makers, including Stephanus Garsia, the author of the Beatus miniatures. The abbey church was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998, under the Way of St. James. (updated Nov 2019)
