South Texas Plains

Texas's southern region is, for the most part, a forbidding desert area. A borderland with nearby Mexico, it acts as a gateway for those coming north and those going south. It's also very warm, even in the winter, so many people come from the north to warm up here.

  • 🌍 The Alamo. It was built as a Spanish mission, and was later transformed into a makeshift fort which became an important battlesite during the Texas-Mexican war, this downtown San Antonio locale is Texas' top tourist attraction.
  • 🌍 Choke Canyon State Park.
  • The Rio Grande River Valley, including Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park near Mission, is scenic and provides an excellent place for birdwatching, with over 500 species.
  • Spanish missions - This region has some of the country's best-preserved examples of Spanish mission architecture. The missions in San Antonio and Goliad are particularly impressive.

Stay safe

Wear sun screen, and a hat. There's really nothing else unless you're worried about getting eaten by a gecko.
