Wentworth (New South Wales)

Wentworth is one of the many border towns along the Murray River, part of the Lower Darling region of Outback New South Wales. It's the home of the meeting point of the Murray and Darling River, the two longest rivers in Australia.

Get in

By plane

Wentworth Airport does not have any scheduled passenger flights from anywhere and is only used for other purposes. The closest airport with scheduled flights is Mildura Airport (MQL IATA).

By bus

The only major public transport that connects Wentworth is the 950 bus line from Mildura, passing Buronga and Curlwaa.

By car

From Mildura CBD, it's about a half an hour drive north via the A79 Calder Highway and then the B79 Silver City Highway which is on the route to Broken Hill. It's usually an easy drive, except when crossing the Murray River where only one vehicle can cross at a time.

It's a single storey brick jail with bluestone trim, built between 1879 and 1881 and on the northwestern margin of the Wentworth township, surrounded by flat vacant lands to the north and west.

These sandhills are much bigger than they look in images, and possibly one of the furthest points that you could still have the enjoyments on a beach and yet be so far away from the coast.
  • 🌍 Junction Park, Cadell St. The park where you can see the meeting point of the two longest rivers in Australia; the Murray River and the Darling River. Includes a lookout as well.
  • 🌍 Saint Ignatius School, 3 Meek St. A heritage-listed former kindergarten and Roman Catholic school which is now a museum. Built between 1911 and 1912 by Ducan McLean, the building in which this school was in is an unusual symmetrical structure of weatherboard construction.
  • 🌍 Wentworth Pioneer Museum, 117 Beverley St, +61 3 5027 3160. 10AM–4PM. A small museum that contains random artifacts from colonial New South Wales, exhibiting what life was like on the Murray during the era of agriculture. The museum also has a few replicas of now-extinct creatures that roamed around the Lower Darling region.
